Profile of Kawase Hasui <br />Kawase Hasui (1883 – 1957) was a figure who, together with publisher Watanabe Shozaburo, established "Shin-hanga," a new style of ukiyo-e woodblock print, in order to revive the declining art of Japanese ukiyo-e woodblock printing.
Born as the eldest son of a silk weaving merchant, he became a pupil of the Japanese painter Kaburagi Kiyokata, and it was at this time that he was given the art name "Hasui." After seeing the "Eight Views of Omi" by his fellow pupil Ito Shinsui, he became interested in woodblock printing, and in 1918, he published the Shiobara Trilogy from Watanabe Print Shop. After that, he continued to publish numerous prints based on sketches he made during his travels throughout Japan, and became a leading figure in modern landscape printmaking.
Hasui, who richly and lyrically depicted beautiful Japanese landscapes, is known as the "poet of travel," the "printmaker of travel," and the "Hiroshige of the Showa era," and is so popular overseas that he is often mentioned alongside Katsushika Hokusai and Utagawa Hiroshige.
