·overview
In the slums of Ghana, there are people who make a living by burning electronic devices thrown away by developed countries. Artist Shingo Nagasaka was shocked by the situation he saw on his first visit to Ghana, which led him to begin his creative activities using waste materials. Since 2018, he has continued to hold exhibitions with the title "Still a Black Star" inspired by the Ghanaian flag. Ghana was the first African country to gain independence in the 20th century. The black star in the center of the national flag is designed as a symbol of Africa's freedom. However, what Nagasaka saw in the slums was far from freedom and affluence. The title “Still Black Star'' expresses the situation in countries where people have not yet been able to live a bright life. And it embodies Nagasaka's strong will to not stop working until this black star shines. Nagasaka, who practices “sustainable capitalism,'' a new capitalist system in which the three axes of economy, culture, and environment (social contribution) are in a virtuous cycle while actively creating local employment, is active as an artist and as a manager. We are developing four businesses: gallery management to support local artists, recycling factory, organic farm, and EV business.
The theme of this exhibition is It is called "Think Tank Of Freedom & Justice" – a research institute for freedom and justice – and includes new works using discarded clothing donated in large quantities from developed countries, and the idea that "we are all carrying a black star towards world peace." A new work in the themed "Transporter" series was also announced. More than 30 two-dimensional and three-dimensional works will be exhibited. Please look forward to the first solo exhibition in 2024.
・Artist statement
Someone once said this to me. “It is impossible to make slums self-sustaining.''
Some people laughed at my challenge, which I started by myself.
But what do you think? Today, 43 young slum workers are still working hard to achieve the goal of slum eradication. Our goal is to eradicate slums and provide sustainable, healthy jobs for all 10,000 families in our city.
If we can provide healthy employment to 10,000 people, it will lead to employment for the entire city.Currently, 43 people are employed, which is a 0.43% achievement rate for 10,000 people.
We are weak, but we are not powerless. We will work hard to create jobs for each and every day, and strive to make the impossible possible by eventually providing sustainable employment to 99.57% of our people.
Together, we will definitely eradicate slums like never before!
I will not stop painting until I make Ghana's black star shine, which is also the title of this solo exhibition. The more I draw, the less trash there is in the slums. The more we sell, the more we will continue to make sustainable business investments in slums. This will improve the slum environment and create new sustainable jobs. Aiming to create 10,000 jobs, solve Agbogblosi's environmental problems, eradicate slums, and become the world's best painter.

Born in 1984. In June 2017, I visited Agbogblosi, a slum in Ghana, and met people who make a living by burning electronic devices thrown away by developed countries. Since then, he has been creating works using waste materials and using the funds generated from the sales to build local recycling plants, as well as developing businesses that do not pollute the environment, such as agriculture and EVs. He advocates “sustainable capitalism,'' a new capitalist system in which the three axes of economy, culture, and environment (social contribution) are in a virtuous cycle, and continues to work tirelessly every day to transform slums into sustainable towns. In September 2022, he will hold his first solo museum exhibition at the Ueno Royal Museum in Tokyo. In November of the same year, won the 51st Best Dresser Award in the academic and cultural category. Established "MAGO MOTORS LTD" in Ghana and currently employs 43 Ghanaians. (As of December 2023)
