[Wako, Ginza] “Tsunenobu Namiki’s Selected Works Retrospective – Urushi Hymn” to be held from Friday, May 9th

"The Flow of Time" 100F (162x130cm)

An exhibition of over 70 pieces by lacquer artist Namiki Tsunenobu.

Seiko House Hall will be holding "Namiki Tsunenobu Self-Selected Retrospective – Hymn to Urushi" from Friday, May 9th to Sunday, May 18th, the ninth solo exhibition by lacquer artist Namiki Tsunenobu, his first at Wako in four years.

Namiki has carved out his own unique world of pictorial expression using traditional lacquer art techniques such as maki-e, mother-of-pearl and eggshell. In this exhibition, he looks back on his journey so far and takes on Leonardo da Vinci's Mona Lisa in the portrait he has been working on as his life's work. The expression, which seems to be gently smiling, is delicately expressed not with oil painting, but with a gradation created by varying the way gold dust is sprinkled, a technique known as maki-e. Please pay attention not only to the face, but also to the expression and presence of both hands.

The exhibition will feature over 70 other pieces, including large-scale 100-size lacquer panel works such as his representative works "Waterfall" and "With the Flow of Time," as well as medium and small works, including foil paintings, sketches, and three-dimensional works such as vessels.
Please enjoy the magnificent world of Namiki, who depicts majestic landscapes that somehow touch the heartstrings of Japanese people and the beauty of nature all around us.
