Masu has long been used as a tool for measuring grain in the calculation of annual tribute, as the size is expressed in units of capacity such as 1 sho and 1 go. Masu has become popular as a measuring instrument, but now it can be used for celebrations, putting small items, decorating, etc., depending on the idea.

Ogaki City, Gifu Prefecture, is Japan's number one producer, accounting for 80% of the national production of wooden Masu. Even after the changing times, there are still three manufacturers in the city, and the craftsmen keep the technique and tradition of making braided wooden boxes without using nails. Even now that the number of festive seats has decreased due to the passage of time and the chances of using Masu are decreasing, we continue to convey the value of Masu that is familiar to us today while proposing various ways to use it.

At Creation Kids Lab 2020, which was held online in August, Masu with children's designs will also be exhibited at the venue.

The proceeds from this project will be used to support Japanese children who will lead the future, including activities such as providing emergency child benefits to households affected by COVID-19 and emergency support for the heavy rain in July 2020. Donate to Save the Children.

We will introduce the details of the project and the state of Masu production on the special site. We are planning to accept reservations for visits and release the works of all artists in mid-November.

[What is Creation Project]

An annual charity project that started in 1990 so that many people can feel the joy of art and design. We display and sell works created by volunteers from creators who interact with the two galleries, and donate the proceeds as a charity. Since 2009, under the title of "Creation Project," we donated a total of approximately 11.34 million yen as a donation for the Great East Japan Earthquake from 2011 to 2015, and 1.58 million yen as a donation for the Kumamoto Earthquake in 2016. Since 2017, we have continued as a project to expand the production area to the whole of Japan and disseminate Japanese manufacturing and industry with the power of design, and donated a total of about 2.83 million yen to Save the Children.

■ Until the Masu is made

There are 12 steps in making a box, from the purchase of materials to the completion. Since it is made by assembling wood without using nails, careful work by craftsmen is indispensable in every process so that there are no gaps or distortions in the box. Details of the process are available on our website.

■ Exhibition of Masu designed by children at Creation Kids Lab 2020

Creation Gallery G8 held a workshop for children, "Creation Kids Lab 2020," online on August 29, where children challenged to design a Masu pattern.
A total of 12 elementary school children participated by inviting Mr. Hiroyuki Ohashi of Masu's production company, Mr. Hiroyuki Ohashi, and Mr. Tadashi Amaya, a designer.
We delivered a plain box to each household in advance, and designed the design by considering the usage scene while the children were looking at the real thing. The children's drawings on paper will be printed on a box and will be exhibited at Creation Gallery G8 along with the original drawings.
