ATELIER MUJI GINZA (Chuo-ku, Tokyo / MUJI Ginza store) will hold an exhibition "Wild Handicrafts and Wisdom" at Gallery 1 from September 10, 2021 (Friday) to November 7, 2021 (Sunday). We will hold it.
The ethnic and biological materials that were once exhibited and stored in the "Amazon Folk Museum" and "Amazon Nature Museum" in Tsuruoka City, Yamagata Prefecture, have been protected for posterity even after closing in 2014. .. The collection of Yoshihiko Yamaguchi, a cultural anthropologist who goes far beyond the level of personal collection, with about 8,000 items of daily life crafts and 12,000 items of biological specimens and strips, is a collection of people living there, mainly indigenous people in the Amazon River basin in South America. We have a wide range of materials, from tools closely related to daily life to biological specimens that inhabit the area. From the 1970s to more than a dozen years, the items he has collected through direct communication with local people, such as "bartering," are natural cultural resources.
We get materials around our lives, make our own tools, and live using those tools and wisdom. The indigenous people living in the Amazon River basin are undergoing major changes such as civilized society and environmental destruction, and the traditions and languages of the people are disappearing, but even now, when the number is small, they coexist very close to nature. There are people who continue to live.
It's not about the story of the distant past or another world, but the life that is still practiced on this earth today. There, tools for living have been made in consideration of the relationship with nature and the user. The various thoughts of those who have continued to make these tools are included in Mr. Yamaguchi's collection.
Nature, family, ethnicity, posterity, and as a human being. No relationship can exist without compassion for others. It seems that there is more awareness and learning now that various disasters are occurring.
