Introducing the "Japanese Halloween" project unique to the Art Aquarium Museum, which creates art pieces that incorporate traditional Japanese beauty and spread the world of Japanese culture! Yokai paintings by the talented artist Utagawa Kuniyoshi, who was active during the Edo period and created ukiyo-e works that are still loved around the world, will appear in the popular "Chochinorium" exhibition. In addition, 10 yokai paintings will be added to the "Ukiyo-e Exhibition Area," which displays Kuniyoshi's goldfish-themed works, for a special exhibition.

・Kuniyoshi's monsters will appear in the "Chochinorium" area lined with lanterns!

The currently ongoing autumn exhibition "Fantastic Autumn Night with Swimming Goldfish" (until Wednesday, November 27th) is a lanternrium that creates a fantastical space with countless lanterns. For two weeks only, the yokai drawn by Kuniyoshi will be appearing in this area.
Look forward to the special "Japanese Halloween" production that can only be enjoyed at the Art Aquarium Museum!

・Utagawa Kuniyoshi's Ukiyo-e Exhibition

During the event, the ukiyo-e exhibition area will display 10 of Kuniyoshi's yokai paintings, including works depicting the yokai that will also appear in the special Chochinrium performance.
<Utagawa Kuniyoshi Collection>
Our museum has a permanent exhibition of works depicting goldfish and carp from the works of Utagawa Kuniyoshi, an ukiyo-e artist from the end of the Edo period. Through this "Utagawa Kuniyoshi Ukiyo-e Collection," we convey the culture of goldfish appreciation that has been popular among people since the Edo period.
This limited-time exhibition will be an opportunity to see the unique style of popular yokai paintings, so be sure to enjoy it along with the goldfish art.

・Examples of exhibited works

●Very impressive! Kuniyoshi's dynamic monster paintings <br /> From the Edo period to the Meiji period, kabuki plays depicting the curse of a mysterious cat, linked to family disputes known as "neko soudoumono" (cat-troublesome animals), became popular. This work depicts the scene in which a cat licking oil from a lantern is projected as a shadow puppet, revealing the "bakeneko" (monster cat)'s true nature.
<Work> "The old tale of a playful cat who causes a strange phenomenon at an old temple in the old days of the year"

● Scary yet cute?! Yokai paintings that show the full world of Kuniyoshi <br /> Stories featuring monsters, ghosts, and spirits were hugely popular themes with the people of Edo. In Kuniyoshi's hands, even these "scary" monsters are depicted in a humorous and cute way. Please enjoy his free-flowing imagination in his yokai paintings.

In addition, autumn flowers such as ginkgo trees, maples, and red spider lilies will be displayed, and the entire space will be colored with autumn lighting.
