■Exhibition Contents
ART FOR THOUGHT will be holding Makoto Yoshiura's solo exhibition "Pointing at the Mouth, Pointing at the Gaze." Yoshiura creates prints that exude narrative, using soft contours created with drypoint and fantastical colors and motifs. This will be her first solo exhibition in Tokyo, having been active in the Kansai region.
(Curation: Keiichiro Tao)
■Artist StatementI approach transparent entities through the technique of drypoint copperplate printmaking.
Their existence is forgotten, ignored, and invisible somewhere, existing silently, but I cannot help but find some kind of meaning in such things.
I simply excavate traces of them using drypoint copperplate prints. The things are certainly there, but no one touches them. They are ignored, hidden from view, and their existence fades away. In response, I simply face them in silence. No matter how meaningless and wasteful it may seem, I find myself wanting to listen to their voices, no matter how hard I try.
Things don't speak, and that is why I entrust something to them. As if to convey inarticulate feelings through the palm of my hand, I give flesh to their existence with the sharp lines of my drypoint. Sometimes, that wordless silence pierces the heart more strongly than words. I want to touch, even just a little, the figure that simply exists, without saying a word.
My work is made up of an accumulation of such unconscious thoughts. Even if no one understands them, I listen to their silent cries and inscribe them on the plate.
