Announcement of the 18th “shiseido art egg” exhibition

From Wednesday, March 5 to Sunday, June 29, 2025, the Shiseido Gallery will host solo exhibitions of three artists selected for the 18th Shiseido Art Egg, an open-entry program that supports emerging artists: Daito Shinobu, Suzueri (Suzuki Hideko), and Hirata Naoya.

About "shiseido art egg" "shiseido art egg" is an open-entry program by Shiseido to support emerging artists, stimulating people's sensibilities and diverse values and providing an opportunity for artists who expand the possibilities of new beauty to hold solo exhibitions. Since its launch in 2006, a total of 51 selected artists (groups) have held solo exhibitions and have continued to expand the scope of their work.

18th Selected Artists and Highlights
This year, the 18th, three artists, Shinobu Daito, Suzueri, and Naoya Hirata, were selected from a total of 291 applications. The judging criteria were whether the artists looked at today's world from a unique perspective, sincerely confronted the anxieties and difficulties of the times, and expressed new values and aesthetic sense from there. Daito will attempt to pay tribute to the landscape by walking, dancing, and depicting a story while interpreting the activities of the people left in the landscape. Suzueri will connect a piano and homemade circuits with communication devices, and while finding narrative potential in the representations, will consider the relationship between communication and society. Hirata will explore our physicality and identity through avatars in an age where the body itself is increasingly virtualized through digital technology.
With the support of Shiseido Gallery curators, the three selected artists will work on their creations while deepening their themes and expressions, and will then compile their works into a solo exhibition, which will be presented in the first period (Daito), the second period (Suzueri), and the third period (Hirata). Their works, which confront various changes in society and reexamine our existence, are sure to bring new realizations to viewers.

Jury of the Shiseido Art Egg Award
After the three solo exhibitions, the Shiseido Art Egg Award will be presented to the artist who most evokes the feeling of creating new value. This year's judging panel will be comprised of three judges active in today's creative scene: Yuko Nagayama (architect), Futoshi Hoshino (aesthetician), and Goro Murayama (fine artist).

■Highlights of each exhibition and artist profiles

1st period exhibition Daito Shinobu Exhibition period: March 5th (Wednesday) – April 6th (Sunday), 2025

Shinobu Daito has walked through unfamiliar depopulated and residential areas, dancing the Bon Odori dance, an event held to honor ancestors, to read the atmosphere and explore the activities and whereabouts of the people who remain in the landscape. In this exhibition, he gently connects charcoal drawings and video to depict a story of the landscape that has been woven over time in a monochrome space that has lost its color. By listening and listening to the story, we can be inspired by where we are and where we are headed.

Comment from the artist : I am truly honored to have this opportunity to exhibit in a place I have always wanted to do so.
By reading the traces of human activity remaining in the landscape, I have ascertained "where people are" and have practiced "offering a memorial to the landscape." I bring with me landscapes shrouded in the deep shadows of night that feel a little distant from the elegant, historic buildings of Ginza, yet are surely somewhere connected to it. I hope many people will enjoy watching it.

2nd Exhibition Suzueri (Hiroko Suzuki) Exhibition Period: Wednesday, April 16, 2025 – Sunday, May 18, 2025

Suzueri creates installations and improvisations using devices that link together pianos and electronic circuits she made herself, and seeks to find narrative in the representation of sound and the communication technology that mediates it. It is said that the foundations of modern-day communication technologies such as Wi-Fi and GPS were developed by Hollywood actress and inventor Hedy Lamarr (1914-2000). This exhibition focuses on her turbulent life as an immigrant, and features installations that connect pianos and light bulbs to communication devices, to consider the relationship between communication and society.

A comment from the artist
Until now, I have mainly been performing using devices I have made myself. I applied because I wanted to think beyond the narrative of the devices I make and the sounds they produce, and I am grateful to have been selected. After some deliberation, I decided not to reveal my birth year or the year I graduated from my first university. I am very happy to have had a place in Japan today where I am appreciated regardless of age, gender, or career, and I am very grateful for the generosity of this place. I am feeling nervous, but I will do my best to create a good exhibition space.

Third Exhibition: Hirata Naoya Exhibition Period: Wednesday, May 28, 2025 – Sunday, June 29, 2025

Hirata Naoya explores our physicality and identity in a world where the advancement of digital technology has led to the virtualization of the body itself and the widespread use of avatars. The avatars used in VRSNS (social VR) are not merely "temporary appearances," but are also "mirrors" that reflect the personality and thoughts chosen by will, revealing the true form of the mind. In the future, when advanced AI is born that cannot help but acknowledge personality, will the true identity of the avatar be human or AI? This exhibition attempts to explore the question of "where the soul resides within the surface of the body?"

Comment from the artist : I am truly honored to be a part of the history of the exhibition held at the Shiseido Gallery.
I feel that the way people look at the world today is not changing suddenly, but gradually and unconsciously, due to the emergence of new technology. When technology changes, the way we use our bodies also changes. When the way we use our bodies changes, our minds naturally change along with it. I am one of those who feel this firsthand. What shape is our mind taking now? I would like to face my own expression while thinking about such things.
