IN and OUT have been swapped!? The second installment of the “Sony Design Gallery” is an experiential exhibition that returns unexpected output in response to input: “INxOUT” #SonyDesignGallery

Held at Sony Park Mini from July 27th (Sat) to August 7th (Wed)

Sony Park Mini, an experimental 33-square-meter pop-up space, will host an experiential exhibition titled "INxOUT" on the theme of interface design from July 27th (Sat) to August 7th (Wed), 2024 as the second installment of the "Sony Design Gallery," a program series that introduces Sony design from various perspectives.

This program focuses on Sony's unique interface design. What strange things would happen if you swapped the interfaces of familiar products and got a different "output" from the usual "input"? Through an experience where the ordinary and the extraordinary intersect, you will explore the essence of interface design in the products you use every day.

The Creative Center, the design division of the Sony Group, is engaged in a wide range of design and branding, expanding its scope of activities from products to business areas such as entertainment, finance, and mobility. "Sony Design Gallery" is a program series that evokes and introduces technology that is integrated into our daily lives from various perspectives through the activities of designers who translate technology with the power of creativity.

The second installment of the Sony Design Gallery, "INxOUT," combines several Sony products to create an experience where the input (IN) of one product produces the output (OUT) of another product. For example, by combining a "smile" input to a camera equipped with the "Smile Shutter" function, which detects smiles and automatically releases the shutter, with the "amount" displayed as the output when paying with a card equipped with FeliCa™ contactless IC card technology, the amount displayed will match the strength of the smile of the person standing in front of the camera. So what happens when you hold your card over the camera? Or drop the needle on a record? In this exhibit, you can enjoy the strange discomfort of the rearranged IN and OUT, and get a sense of how intuitive the design of the interfaces we are used to every day is.

Come to the "Sony Design Gallery" at Sony Park Mini in Ginza, a city packed with galleries, to get a glimpse of the playful spirit of Sony design.

*This image is an example of an experience. It may differ from the actual experience.

"Sony Design Gallery" is a program series held by the design division of the Sony Group.
This time, it's the second installment, "INxOUT".

Just tap your card to make a payment.
Drop the needle on the record and music starts playing.

Depending on the IN, various OUTs are returned.
Usually, when we operate some device,
We intuitively predict what will happen.
Designing this entire experience is also the role of Sony's designers.

So, what would happen if we rearranged the IN and OUT relationships?

Through the experience of operating the robot, which sometimes shows strange reactions,
I want people to experience the fun of the user interface.

This exhibition is filled with such thoughts.

■About Sony Group's "Creative Center"

Sony quickly recognized the importance of design shortly after it was founded, and established the Design Office (now the Creative Center) in 1961. Guided by Sony's DNA of "doing things that no one else has done," the Creative Center has expanded its activities from products to business domains such as entertainment, finance, and mobility, and is involved in a wide range of design and branding for the Sony Group. We will continue to explore all possibilities of design, aiming to realize richer and more comfortable lifestyles together with people around the world, and to create "prototypes" of new value brought about by the fusion of creativity and technology.

About Ginza Sony Park

Ginza Sony Park opened on August 9, 2018, during the demolition of Sony Building, inheriting the concept of "a facility open to the city" from the time of Sony Building's establishment. As an "experimental park that is constantly changing" in the city, it hosts a variety of surprising and playful events throughout the year, as well as programs such as "Park Live," which creates serendipitous encounters with music, and has been visited by 8.54 million visitors in three years (as of the end of September 2021).
Reconstruction work is currently underway, and the new Ginza Sony Park is scheduled to be completed this year in 2024.
