Leaving Japan during the bubble era and heading to the tranquil Tuscany. Introducing the world of Hori Fumiko, who depicts the brilliance of life. The venue will also sell a 2026 calendar and posters from that time (limited quantities).

"Wildflowers blooming in the Tuscan countryside. Wheat fields covering the gentle hills. Olive groves. Farmhouses like fortresses on the hills. The forests, the cypress roads, everything was an innocent world reminiscent of the Middle Ages. My roughened heart in Japan was cleansed and revived." (Under the Holly Tree, by Fumiko Hori, Genki Shobo )

"The Work of Hori Fumiko" is a series tracing the 80-year career of Japanese painter Hori Fumiko, who passed away in 2019 at the age of 100. This time, the theme is "Tuscany, Italy."

In March 1987, 68-year-old Fumiko Hori established her studio on the outskirts of Arezzo in the Tuscany region of Italy.
At the time, Japan was in the midst of a bubble economy. Hori turned his back on the trend and chose to base himself in a villa owned by an aristocrat in a rural area far removed from tourism.
When Hori first saw the villages and castles of Tuscany, the cypress roads, and the beautiful countryside that still retained a medieval atmosphere, every scene looked like a painting, and he was captivated. From then on, he traveled back and forth between Japan and Italy, spending half the year there, sitting in the vineyards and olive hills and immersing himself in sketching. Hori later described his feelings at that time as "a recapture of the emotions of innocence."
In 1992, to commemorate the 500th anniversary of the death of the Renaissance master Piero della Francesca, she was invited to Arezzo to hold the "Hori Fumiko Japanese Painting Exhibition." The exhibition featured approximately 40 works and drawings from her early period to her Italian period, and was well received by the entire town.
This exhibition brings together sketches and Japanese paintings that Hori created during the five years he spent in Italy. We hope you will enjoy these precious works that he created in Tuscany.

About Nakajima Art

Nakajima Art, located on Ginza 5-chome and Nishi 5th Avenue, is an art gallery showcasing a wide range of paintings, with a focus on Japanese paintings.
Since its opening in 1995, the gallery has served as a venue for conveying the appeal of Japanese painting, showcasing works by a diverse range of artists, from masters to young artists.
We have been handling works by many artists who have colored the history of Japanese painting, including Japanese painter Fumiko Hori, with whom we have had a close relationship since the gallery first opened, as well as Tamako Kataoka and Ikuo Hirayama. In particular, for many years we have been working with Fumiko Hori, holding an annual exhibition of new works entitled "Fumiko Hori Present," showcasing her creations throughout her life. We are currently holding an exhibition of Fumiko Hori's work in the fall, with the theme "The Work of Fumiko Hori."
In recent years, the museum has also been focusing on special exhibitions that support new challenges faced by young artists, and is showcasing the talents of the next generation of Japanese painting artists.
