■ "Mingei MINGEI Life Beauty Exhibition"

The Mingei movement and MUJI, which were born in different eras, have continued to question their origins in the consumer society, while receiving trends and changes in lifestyle. This mobile exhibition "Mingei MINGEI Life Beauty Exhibition" is a guide to the future while learning from the beauty of Mingei with the cooperation of the Japan Folk Crafts Museum in order to raise a new flag for future MUJI products. This is an exhibition that creates a message to find out.

In a special space created in the communication space "Open MUJI" inside the store, folk crafts born from people's lives and MUJI products as daily necessities that are the basis of modern life will be exhibited.

As the name suggests, MUJI continues to manufacture products so that they can be integrated into everyday life without the claims of daily necessities. We want to be a presence that blends into our daily lives and is useful to people in any place such as the kitchen, living room, and washroom, not only in Japan but also around the world.

We hope that this exhibition will be an opportunity for you to take a closer look at the ideas behind MUJI's manufacturing.

After the exhibition at "MUJI Naoetsu", we plan to visit MUJI stores all over Japan. The next event is scheduled to be held at "MUJI Ginza" from mid-March 2021.

[This exhibition curator message]

Some people call MUJI a modern folk art or a modern folk tool.
Of course, there are differences in the manufacturing methods, but I think they have something in common, such as not writing the author's name on the product and the selfless and sincere attitude of manufacturing without decoration. What's more, they are quietly giving off a beauty that suits their needs.

"Folk art" is a word named by Soetsu Yanagi and others in 1925, and refers to "people's crafts". Yanagi found that healthy and ordinary beauty dwells in practical handicrafts with warmth made for the masses, not elegant gems for ornamental purposes.

Soetsu Yanagi, who advocated a unique "aesthetic of things" that is close to our daily lives and daily lives, wanted to share the 17,000 folk crafts he had collected and their aesthetics with many people, and in 1936 the Japanese folk crafts The building was established. The Japan Folk Crafts Museum still exists as a base for the Mingei movement that disseminates its aesthetics.
MUJI, on the other hand, was founded in 1980 with the aim of resisting manufacturing based on marked marketing strategies and aiming for simple, rich and true value.

It may be said that it is a modern folk art movement by products. To be close to the peaceful and casual daily life that people cherish from the bottom of their hearts. I don't think the heart of the Japan Folk Crafts Museum and MUJI will change.

"Folk art" is the source of the power to create beauty. We hope that the "Folk Art Life Beauty Exhibition", which introduces the essence, will be a touchstone for manufacturing for the future.
