The Pola Museum Annex (Ginza, Chuo-ku, Tokyo) will hold an exhibition commemorating the 15th anniversary of the Pola Ginza Building, "Matisse – A Play of Color," from Friday, October 4th to Sunday, October 27th, 2024.
Henri Matisse is one of the most representative painters of the 20th century, whose works, expressed with bold, vivid colors, leave a strong impression on viewers, and he has been called the "Magician of Color" for his unique sense of color. Matisse's production style, which directly expresses emotions, creates dynamism in his works, and the placement and balance of colors creates a visual rhythm that is almost like music.
This exhibition will feature five paintings, including "The Lute," from the Pola Museum of Art's collection, which are masterpieces of interior painting that Matisse continued to paint throughout his life, as well as "Jazz" (20 illustrations in total), which is said to be a masterpiece from his later years.
During the exhibition, we will be offering programs that allow everyone to enjoy the masterpieces, such as viewing sessions with babies, which are convenient for visitors with babies, and interactive viewing sessions for seniors, including those with dementia. We will also be holding a workshop incorporating Matisse's paper cutting techniques, with paper cutting artist Risa Fukui as the instructor.

■Artist Profile
Born in northern France, Henri Matisse (1869-1954) went to Paris to study at art schools, and after exhibiting works using a lot of primary colors and rough brushstrokes at the Salon d'Automne in 1905, he was described as a "Fauve" (wild beast). From 1917 onwards, he moved his base of operations to Nice, where, under the bright light of the Mediterranean, he painted many female interiors in vivid colours. In his later years, he was stricken by difficulties such as the war and his own illness, but he continued to produce works with enthusiasm, incorporating paper cutting techniques in addition to oil paintings and drawings, and developed his art across genres, such as the illustrated book "Jazz" and the decorative program for the Rosary Chapel.
■ Interactive viewing sessions
This is an interactive art appreciation program where participants can freely talk about their feelings and thoughts while looking at masterpieces with a facilitator. The afternoon session is aimed at people aged 65 and over, including those with dementia.

■ Baby Viewing Session
It's a day where you can enjoy the exhibition with your baby. There's no need to worry about "having to keep quiet" or "what if the baby cries." You can enjoy the artworks without worrying about the people around you. The venue will play background music to calm babies, and there is a baby space available. You can also view the exhibition with a stroller.

Risa Fukui Profile:
Born in Shizuoka Prefecture in 1975. Graduated from Tama Art University with a major in graphic design.
A paper cutting artist who depicts a world of lines full of vitality that overwhelms the viewer with detailed depictions and bold compositions based on precise observation. His work includes CD jacket artwork for Mika Nakashima, collaboration sneakers with Reebok and participation in Uniqlo's "UT", illustrations and book design for novels by Naoki Prize-winning authors Natsuo Kirino and Noboru Kiuchi, video production for NHK's Dazai Osamu short story collection "Good-bye", and opening titles for NHK's "The Cat's Tail, the Frog's Hand". He was in charge of the main visuals for the "Wa no Kai" event organized by the head of the Hosho school of Noh (2008-2018). He has published the July 2019 issue of Fukuinkan Shoten Kagaku no Tomo picture book "The World of Insect Sounds" and the November 2022 issue of "Larch – The Tree that Creates Mt. Fuji Forest".
