José Parlá Morning Blossoms Over Tokyo (Multiversal) 2025 6 x 16 feet (182.8 x 487.6 cm) quadriptych Acrylic, oil paint, plaster and collage on canvas
Starting June 20th (Friday)
The Pola Museum Annex (Ginza, Chuo-ku, Tokyo) will hold a solo exhibition of works by internationally active New York-based artist Jose Parla titled "Home Away from Home" from Friday, June 20th to Sunday, July 27th, 2025.
Born in Miami in 1973, Parla grew up surrounded by diverse immigrant cultures, including those from the United States, Puerto Rico, and Cuba. This environment deeply influenced his understanding of urban life and art, providing a great inspiration for his work. Parla's work, characterized by unique calligraphy and layered paint, evokes memories and traces left on the walls, while also being heavily colored by his own experiences. In particular, his dialogue with the cities and diverse expressions he encountered while traveling around the world has encouraged Parla to explore his own unique visual language, which intersects with different abstract expressions. Parla's work poses poetic questions about concepts such as language and identity, as well as the very definition of place and space.
This exhibition, entitled "Home Away from Home," will be held simultaneously with KOTARO NUKAGA ROPPONGI. Rather than being limited to one "home," Parla's works will be exhibited from the perspective of a landscape that is constantly changing and is formed by memories, travel, and human connections.
At the Pola Museum Annex, Bizen ware pieces created during stays at potteries and collaborative works with Japanese artists and fashion designers will be exhibited, tracing Parla's comprehensive activities and roots, and a total of 18 works will be presented, including a new large-scale piece themed on Tokyo. At KOTARO NUKAGA ROPPONGI, new paintings inspired by the time and encounters he has spent in Japan will be presented.
Please come and see Parla's ever-changing artistic trajectory from the different perspectives of the two venues.
