·overview
Mayu Yukishita was born in 1995. She graduated from Tama Art University's Department of Graphic Design and works on oil paintings, novel cover illustrations, and illustrations for advertising works. In 2020, she launched a fashion brand as a designer, and was selected for the ART & STYLE category of "Forbes JAPAN 30 UNDER 30 2024" (30 people under 30 who are changing the world) last year. She is one of the most notable artists who is active in various fields. In this exhibition titled "Spectrum", she will present a series of works that question the society that captures and prejudges the complex state of human existence within a certain framework. Through her works, she expresses the transitions between dualities that make up the complex reality surrounding this world, such as realism and abstraction, anxiety and hope, beauty and fear, chaos and order. The people and scenes depicted with a blank gaze stand in the contrast of red light and shadow, evoking blood and pain. They also make the viewer feel the violence inherent in the gaze of others.
In conjunction with this event, GINZA ART SQUARE, adjacent to the venue, will be introducing related products, as well as exhibiting and selling 10 previously published illustrations as prints. Please come to the venue to see Mayu Yukishita's current work, which continues to be expressed in a variety of ways.
・Artist statement
Society tries to categorize people into simple dualisms.
But our characteristics lie outside of that framework, on an ever-shifting spectrum.
It does not remain in one place, but changes form depending on the environment and situation.
However, we often try to draw clear lines and make judgments about others.
The shadow cast by these values is cast on the gazes of the people depicted in this exhibition.
The color red, one of the themes of this exhibition, is a symbol of blood and life,
It also makes visible the violence inherent in dualism.
I want to continue questioning the meaning of the ambiguity and change of human contours.
This production is one form of that contemplation.
