Ryohin Keikaku Co., Ltd., the company that operates MUJI, will hold the exhibition "'Book Activist' Irma Boom: Book Activist" at ATELIER MUJI GINZA Gallery 1 & 2 inside "MUJI Ginza" (Chuo-ku, Tokyo) from June 5th (Fri) to August 23rd (Sun), 2026.
Since its launch in 2015, MUJI BOOKS has been proposing a lifestyle with books, based on the concept of "Always with good words." We believe that "paper books" not only serve to convey information through words and pictures, but also exist as physical objects in space, and unlike the fragments of information that disappear in an instant on a digital screen, they are three-dimensional and complex, and exist to grow together with people over time.
To commemorate MUJI BOOKS' 10th anniversary, we have collaborated with Dutch graphic designer Irma Boom to create a book called "Book Activist." "Book Activist" is a term that celebrates everyone involved with books: readers, sellers, distributors, binders, printers, writers, and more. Through her work, which spans over 40 years and encompasses more than 500 books, this book explores "paper books" from various perspectives. It is small enough to fit in the palm of your hand, yet thick like a dictionary.
Irma Bohm has created books in various forms with diverse partners around the world. Her style of extracting only what is necessary from a vast amount of information and constructing it in the form of a "paper book" resonates with the philosophy behind Muji's manufacturing, which involves selecting materials, reviewing processes, and shaping products that fulfill essential functions. Through this exhibition, we aim to re-examine the value and potential of "paper books" and create a space that will inspire us to continue living with "good words" in the future.
The exhibition will feature, for the first time in Asia, Irma Bohm's unique "paper books," as well as rare books housed in MoMA and the Centre Pompidou, handmade miniature book models that are not usually on display, and "IBO Paper," a paper developed in collaboration with a paper company. A selection of "inspiring quotes" excerpted from her books will also be presented.

What is "MUJI BOOKS"?
In 2015, MUJI BOOKS launched at Canal City Hakata as a multi-purpose sales area featuring approximately 30,000 books alongside MUJI's product range, based on the concept of "Always with good words." Currently, MUJI BOOKS sales areas are located in 58 stores throughout Japan. In 2017, the company launched the paperback series "People and Things," which has now published 24 titles. This series compiles essays and illustrations, each presented as "one book per person," showcasing the thoughts and lifestyles that MUJI values, from the perspective that writers, poets, and film directors are all individuals with their own lives.
"ATELIER MUJI" was named by Ikko Tanaka, a graphic designer and art director for MUJI, and operates under the philosophy that "this is a workshop where we can return to the origins of living and find hints for moving forward into the future." This forward-looking activity serves as a cultural crossroads as envisioned by Ryohin Keikaku, and hosts exhibitions and events on diverse themes such as art and design. In 2025, "ATELIER MUJI BANGKOK" opened.
