After joining the television production company Television Man Union, Kore-eda gained recognition as a TV documentary director, and in 1995, he released his first feature film, "Maborosi." Utilizing his documentary experience, he established his own methodology and became an internationally recognized figure. His 2018 film "Shoplifters" won the Palme d'Or, the highest award at the 71st Cannes International Film Festival.
This year, we have two upcoming releases: "The Sheep in the Box" (opening nationwide on May 29th), starring Haruka Ayase and Daigo (Chidori), and "Look Back," a live-action film adaptation of Tatsuki Fujimoto's manga of the same name.

This project is the first large-scale retrospective screening in Japan to focus on the entire career of filmmaker Hirokazu Kore-eda. It features 24 programs (30 works) , including feature films, early TV documentaries, and TV dramas, offering insights into Kore-eda's artistic identity.

Highlights

A special screening tracing Kore-eda's filmography.

From his debut feature film " Maborosi " (1995), which impressed with the emergence of a new talent, to " Monster " (2023), a collaboration with screenwriter Yuji Sakamoto that garnered attention and won the Best Screenplay and Queer Palm awards at the 76th Cannes International Film Festival, this exhibition traces Hirokazu Kore-eda's filmography spanning approximately 30 years. New prints and DCPs have been created for 11 of his feature films.

A rare opportunity to watch early TV documentaries and TV dramas on the big screen.

Two of Kore-eda's early TV documentaries, which he himself says "shaped the direction of my work afterward"—" But… In an Era of Welfare Cuts " (1991) and " Another Education: A Record of the Spring Class at Ina Elementary School " (1991)—will be screened as special presentations. In addition, all 10 episodes of " Going My Home " (2012), Kore-eda's first television drama series, which was screened at the Rotterdam International Film Festival in 2013, will be shown on the big screen in Japan for the first time.
