Announcement of the 15th “shiseido art egg” exhibition

Now, in the world we live in, new everyday life is being carried out. People's values have changed drastically as they spend their unstable and fluid daily lives. In addition to lifestyles, the environment surrounding art and culture is undergoing major changes. Because of this era, we will continue to question the role that art can play while flexibly accepting new realities.

Since its opening in 1919, Shiseido Gallery has continued its activities to provide people with beautiful encounters and experiences through art, based on the activity philosophy of "discovering and creating new beauty."
The shiseido art egg is a public offering program that started in 2006 and supports the "discovery and creation of new beauty" by fresh and up-and-coming artists. Winners will discuss with the curator in charge and create an exhibition together, just like the regular exhibition held at Shiseido Gallery.

This year, the 15th time, we received 243 applications from all over the country. Many original plans were proposed this time as well, but as a result of the selection, three people, Umi Ishihara, who express the new values and aesthetics of today's world from their own perspective, were proposed. ), Mika Kan, and Kayako Nakajima were selected.

The winners' solo exhibitions will be held from September 14th (Tuesday) to December 19th (Sunday), 2021. Because of the times when it is said to be uncertain and unstable, the works produced by seriously facing modern society will bring new awareness to what we see. We hope that this exhibition will help you to realize a better society.

The judges for this year's shiseido art egg award * include Kenichi Kanazawa (sculptor), Nodoka Odawara (sculptor / critic / publisher representative), and Erica Kobayashi (sculptor / critic / publisher representative) as professionals who are active in today's creative scene. We will welcome three writers / manga artists) to carry out the judging.

* This award is given to the work that boldly challenged the space of the Shiseido Gallery and made us feel the creation of new value from the exhibitions of the three selected artists. Winners will be announced on the Shiseido Gallery official website around the end of December this year.

Shiseido has established "BEAUTY INNOVATIONS FOR A BETTER WORLD" as its corporate mission. The beautiful encounters and experiences brought about by art may be one of the guides for our way of life and way of thinking in an unprecedentedly unstable world. It leads to innovations that change our behavior, even if it is a small part of our daily lives, and it is our own behavior that makes today's world beautiful and better. ..

Umi Ishihara Exhibition
Date: September 14th (Tuesday) -October 10th (Sunday), 2021

Ishihara works on experimental films and video installations on the themes of love, gender, personal history and society. The work, which is built around actual events and adds fiction and narrative elements with a unique sense, carefully captures one aspect of modern society and the subtleties of the mind. In this exhibition, we will pursue the meaning of suffering and life through theatrical performances with the people who gather in the church in Kitakyushu, and by crossing the interviews, it will be a place to present the fundamental questions.

Award comment
The video work I make is made with the help and cooperation of various people, and it is not made by one person alone. The reason why I have continued to produce and I am still able to continue is that I am allowed to meet the talented people who have taken me on a turbulent journey together and many times in my life. Thanks to my friends. In order to continue this strange journey with those loved ones, I would like to do my best to hold an exhibition at the best place, Shiseido Gallery.

Mika Suga Exhibition
Date: October 19th (Tuesday) -November 14th (Sunday), 2021

Suga uses media such as photographs, dolls, and videos to discuss "what is a human being" with the theme of new physical sensations and reproductive ideals that are changing due to technological advances such as humanoid robots and advanced reproductive medicine. I'm asking. Works that shake visual perception will give a sense of changes in values in the near future and present a new world to the viewer.

Award comment
I am honored to have the opportunity to exhibit.
We are exploring what we can and should do in the difficult situation of actually meeting people and going out. I have explored reality in the world through lenses by taking pictures of non-human dolls.
It was not just a binary opposition such as real / fake or real / virtual, but a prediction of a complex mixture of them in the near future. As our lives and behaviors change, the future we have imagined may come sooner than we expected.

Kayako Nakajima Exhibition
Date: November 23rd (Tuesday) -December 19th (Sunday), 2021

Nakajima creates works that ask about the relationship between people and places, using walls and boundaries as motifs. In this exhibition, the gallery will be divided by a huge wall to create a space where only light and sound come and go depending on the movement of the viewer. The light or sound that becomes some sign and is sent to the other side of the wall may be violent or hopeful, depending on the condition of the recipient. In this era where you can easily connect with others without actually meeting, it will be an exhibition that will remind you of communication.

Main activities
2019 "FREMANTLE BIENNALE 2019" (Australia) Group Exhibition
2019 "Fault line art festival" (Taiwan) group exhibition

Award comment
I am very honored to have the opportunity to exhibit at the Shiseido Gallery, which was my goal.
In the middle of writing this sentence, a quarrel with my partner started. I want to make up quickly, but it may not be easy. The sense of distance between myself and objects other than myself is also the theme of this work. As values open with the times, we have the opportunity to learn about diversity. However, at the same time, I feel that the number of scenes that unknowingly hurt others has increased.
I would like to carefully create works while taking advantage of the charm of the place that Shiseido Gallery has.
