1/31 (Fri) – 4/13 (Sun)
Ryohin Keikaku Co., Ltd., the operator of MUJI, will hold a special exhibition called "Mountain Daigomi Exhibition" at ATELIER MUJI GINZA Gallery 1 and 2 in MUJI Ginza (Chuo-ku, Tokyo) from Friday, January 31, 2025 to Sunday, April 13, 2025.
Ryohin Keikaku adheres to the three principles of "selection of materials," "process inspection," and "simplification of packaging" in the manufacturing of MUJI products, and continues to create everyday items that support the basics of everyday life while being considerate of society and the environment, aiming to realize "a pleasant life and society" not only through products but also through services and activities. Since the birth of MUJI, the company has been manufacturing products that use resources carefully and without waste, commercializing parts that were selected for appearance and unused parts.
Based on MUJI's manufacturing philosophy, this exhibition will explore the joy of using wood, which at first glance appears to be trash, to create products using ingenuity (Daigomi). In cooperation with the Mountain Daigomi Project Team and people involved in the forestry industry in Miyazaki Prefecture, we will view wood that is not sold on the market and is considered difficult to use as part of mountain and forest resources, and will attempt to exhibit an exhibit that explores the possibilities of manufacturing that makes full use of wood.
The exhibit will display actual tree stumps, branches, and leaves to clearly explain how wood is used in our daily lives and the issues facing Japan's forests, such as the low wood self-sufficiency rate and the decline in forestry workers. In addition, furniture and lighting fixtures that use all wood will be exhibited as a way to utilize unused wood.
Mountain Daigomi Project
This project aims to bring products made from unused materials produced at each stage of the forestry industry to market, and to connect production areas (regions) with consumption areas (urban areas) by organizing forestry tours for consumers. This project is made up of the Yama no Daigomi Project Team (Tokyo and Miyazaki Prefecture), Miyazaki Prefecture, NPO Miyazaki Bunka Honpo (Miyazaki Prefecture), Uchida Yoko Co., Ltd. (Tokyo), and Power Place Co., Ltd. (Tokyo), with Ryohin Keikaku taking charge of joint project planning and product development.
In addition, the activities of this project won the Excellence Award (Forestry Agency Director-General's Award) in the Heartful Design category of the Wood Design Award 2024.
*Wood Design Award: An awards system that solicits, evaluates and awards outstanding architecture, spaces, products, activities, systems, research, etc., with the aim of reconstructing the quality and value of wood through the power of design.
