Ginza Mitsukoshi will be holding a solo exhibition of "Garden" by internationally acclaimed contemporary artist SHUN SUDO at the GINZA Contemporary Art Stage on the second floor of the main building from Wednesday, August 6, 2025 to Monday, September 1, 2025.
SHUN SUDO's latest work will be the final piece at the GINZA Contemporary Art Stage
Since March of this year, Ginza Mitsukoshi has been hosting six solo and group exhibitions at its pop-up art gallery, "GINZA Contemporary Art Stage," to introduce a variety of talented artists. Located in the heart of Ginza, facing the Ginza 4-Chome intersection, this newly created luxurious environment has provided quality time for all customers who visit.
The final exhibition will feature a special closing project, "Garden," a solo exhibition by SHUN SUDO, an internationally acclaimed contemporary artist, from Wednesday, August 6, 2025 to Monday, September 1, 2025.
Since his first solo exhibition in New York in 2015, Shun Sudo has captivated many viewers with his vivid, original and message-filled acrylic works. His most iconic motif, the "Button Flower," is loved around the world as an embodiment of the artist's philosophy of "connecting different cultures and people," and has also attracted attention through collaborations with global brands such as Sony, Porsche and Christian Louboutin.
In recent years, he has been actively involved in charity activities, and was in charge of designing the charity T-shirts for the 2023 24-Hour Television (Nippon Television). In addition, in November of the same year, he exhibited a special work called "ETERNAL MOMENT" at Ryosokuin Temple in Kyoto, depicting a "BUTTON FLOWER" on a traditional Japanese gold folding screen, and donated it to the temple. He is also committed to activities that connect Japanese culture through his works.
Ginza is a special town for SHUN SUDO, and the theme is "Garden"
When he was a child, Shun Sudo often walked around Ginza with his grandmother. It was a special town where everything he saw sparkled and shone brightly. He says that he felt proud and happy to be there as he watched the smiling faces of the adults walking by. The theme of Shun Sudo's solo exhibition, held in this special town for him, is "Garden." He wanted to make lots of flowers bloom in midsummer Ginza. With this simple thought in mind, he continued to move his brush.
The works on display this time are a collection of oil paintings that he has been working on since last year. The works, entitled "Garden," the same title as his solo exhibition, are full of the vitality that is characteristic of SHUN SUDO, while also conveying the narrative and human depth of the path he has taken to get to this point. Evolution and deepening. New yet somehow nostalgic. Please come to this small garden in Ginza to experience a different world of SHUN SUDO than before.
– Profile – SHUN SUDO
Born in Tokyo in 1977. Self-taught in art, drawing on the sensitivities he gained while traveling around the world.
In 2015, he held his first solo exhibition "PAINT OVER" in New York. Since then, he has held solo exhibitions both in Japan and abroad. His solo exhibition "2020" held in Tokyo in 2020 depicted a society at the mercy of the COVID-19 pandemic from a unique perspective, and his outstanding works were featured in many media outlets such as Forbes JAPAN and Pen Online, making him a notable artist. The following year, he held the solo exhibition "ARTdemic" hoping for the restoration of art from the pandemic, "Blowin' in the Wind" hoping for peace in 2022, and "ART LAND" pursuing the joy of art in 2023, and has released works with strong messages one after another. The "BUTTON FLOWER", a representative motif of SHUN SUDO's works, is also drawn as a "symbol of LOVE & PEACE, with the desire to connect hearts and minds in flowers, like a button connecting two pieces of fabric."
In recent years, in 2023, at the special exhibition "MOMENTARY" held at Ryosokuin Temple in Kyoto, he made a bold attempt to paint "BUTTON FLOWER" on a traditional Japanese gold folding screen, which he later dedicated to the temple. In March 2024, he collaborated with the French maison brand CHRISTIAN LOUBOUTIN to simultaneously release the BUTTON FLOWER BLOSSOMS collection worldwide, expanding the scope of his expressive activities.
