Friday, December 19, 2025 – Sunday, March 15, 2026
Ryohin Keikaku Co., Ltd., the operator of MUJI, will hold a special exhibition titled "Listening to the Fragrance" at ATELIER MUJI GINZA Gallery 1 and 2 in MUJI Ginza (Chuo-ku, Tokyo) from Friday, December 19, 2025 to Sunday, March 15, 2026.
MUJI creates products that are close to people's lives, while taking into consideration the modern living environment, and offers scented products such as essential oils, aroma candles, room fragrances, and incense as elements that enhance the comfort of interior spaces. The history of fragrance in Japan spans approximately 1,500 years, and it has been used in a variety of ways throughout that long history. In particular, "The Tale of Genji," written in the Heian period, describes how fragrance was incorporated into daily life in a form similar to that of the present day.
This exhibition reconsiders the historic fragrances that have been loved since ancient times from five perspectives: "lifestyle," "history," "experience," "editing," and "language," visualizing the relationship between life and fragrance through the exhibit. This experimental attempt allows you to enjoy the abstract world of olfaction, exploring what a good smell means to us and what it is that makes us feel comfortable.
The venue will offer visitors the opportunity to see MUJI's fragrance-related products and the background to their creation, as well as an exhibition that looks back on the evolution of fragrance in our lives. Furthermore, there will be an installation where visitors can experience the "Exhibition Scent," which was created by Ryohin Keikaku staff using various words that came to mind when imagining the exhibition, providing an active experience that allows visitors to confront themselves through scent.

About "ATELIER MUJI" "ATELIER MUJI" was named by graphic designer and MUJI art director Ikko Tanaka, and is run under the philosophy that "this is a workshop where we return to the origins of life and find hints for moving forward into the future." This forward-looking activity is held as a cultural crossroads that Ryohin Keikaku considers to be a place where exhibitions and events are held on a variety of themes, including art and design.
