Galerie Tamenaga will be holding a solo exhibition of Daiya Yamamoto (1986-), an artist who combines traditional Western painting techniques with Japanese aesthetic sensibilities to express the "contemporary" time, from Saturday, May 24th to Sunday, June 22nd, 2025. Yamamoto captivated European art fans at his solo exhibition held at Galerie Tamenaga in Paris in 2023. Since then, this long-awaited first solo exhibition at our Tokyo store will feature approximately 40 new works.
Yamamoto makes full use of the traditional Western technique of trompe-l'œil to create works that make the motifs appear as if they were actually there. This technique is generally used to create a gorgeous picture plane by including many motifs, but Yamamoto has created a new form of trompe-l'œil by narrowing down the elements and incorporating the uniquely Japanese aesthetic of "white space." The motifs arranged in the wide, pure white space are a number of things that the artist is attracted to in everyday life, such as a single flower or plant, as well as sweets, masking tape, and sticky notes. Yamamoto's unique trompe-l'œil, which is minimalist and sophisticated, vividly reflects the "modern Japan" in which we live, while also imparting to the viewer a sense of Japanese serenity and tranquility.
