Galerie Tamenaga will hold a retrospective of the contemporary figurative painter Bernard Buffet (1928-1999), known as the last great French master of the 20th century, from Saturday, September 21 to Sunday, October 20, 2024. This exhibition, which will be held for the first time in five years at the Tokyo store, will trace Buffet's life, showcasing approximately 35 pieces spanning from his early years to his final years.
During the heyday of abstract painting, Bernard Buffet quickly made a name for himself in the French painting world with his figurative paintings featuring strong, sharp black lines and unique colors. Galerie Tamenaga founder Seiji Tamenaga was one of the first to notice Buffet's talent and signed an exclusive sales contract with him in the Orient in 1969. Since then, we have been introducing his works to Japan for over half a century.
This exhibition will cover works from the late 1940s, when Buffet established his unique style, through to his final years in the 1990s. Visitors can enjoy the different styles of his work, starting with still lifes that captured the hearts of postwar people with their subdued colors, to works from the 1960s in which he began to layer more powerful lines and colors (Still Life with Fruit in a Basket, 1962), and paintings of Parisian landmarks that he continued to paint throughout his life with his distinctive vertical lines (Conciergerie, 1988, etc.). In addition, the artist Buffet himself will be visible in his diverse works on such themes as insects, which offer a glimpse of his childhood interest in museology, and clowns and cars.
