[About the special exhibition "Mina Tabei: Light, Shapes, and Their Surroundings"]

The books and packaging created by Tabei, an art director and graphic designer, have a bright and gentle quality within a dignified elegance, and are eye-catching despite not being flashy. Each design, which serves a purpose, has its own unique appearance, but when viewed as a whole, they appear to be connected by a circle that could be called "Tabeiminaism." Emitting energy from the center of this circle is the challenge of "Light and Shape," which is also the title of this exhibition.

After building her career under Hattori Kazunari, Tabei Mina began pursuing her own unique style of visual expression after going independent. In her search, she came up with the idea of incorporating the allure of the unpredictable world of photographic expression. She immersed herself in the time-consuming and painstaking process of capturing the phenomena of light and shadow, which are beyond her control, and the randomness that appears in this three-dimensional world, onto a two-dimensional page. Tabei says that she is surprised even herself when an image beyond her imagination appears. If this exciting time, accompanied by physicality, is projected onto her works, then perhaps the depth of their impact is what captivates the viewer.

This exhibition will showcase the latest experimental works in the series "Light and Shapes," which he has been pursuing since 2018, in a format that allows visitors to experience the space itself. It will also showcase representative graphic works such as book designs, packaging, and posters that he has undertaken to date. Through both, we will approach the essence of "Tabeiminism."
