About Miroco Machiko Exhibition "Umaito" ――――――――――――――――――――

Miroco Machiko has won numerous domestic and international awards since her debut as a picture book writer in 2012 with "Wolf ga Tobuhi". Also, as a painter, his works that capture the essence of living things and plants with a dynamic brush stroke that seems to stick out of the canvas are highly evaluated. He has developed a wide range of activities from dialogue through pictures, and continues to attract attention such as illustrations for magazines and books, corporate advertisements, art direction, and presentations of installation works at the Yamagata Biennale 2016 and 2018.

Moved from Tokyo to Amami Oshima in 2019, inspired by life on an island with untouched nature, dyeing canvas with local plants and water using traditional dyeing from the island , I started to incorporate some of the island's nature into my paintings. Miroco realized that the power and creativity that can be created in the process of painting is not only taken in by dyeing techniques, but also the accumulated time and environment until completion, the clothes and personal belongings that make up them. Things are also pasted on the picture. The works produced in this way seem to question the way human beings are a part of the natural environment. In this exhibition, not only new works, but also installations of the process from materials to production and production scenery images in the forest of the island will be recorded and exhibited. In addition, we plan to use the gallery space three-dimensionally and improvise live painting with musicians. Please take a look at the new attempts.

Painter and picture book writer.
Born in Osaka in 1981. Held solo exhibitions in Japan and overseas, drawing the appearance of living things in a relaxed manner. At the Bratislava World Picture Book Original Biennale (BIB), "Ore Tokiiro" (WAVE Shuppan) won the Gold Apple Award, and "The Smell of the Kemono" (Iwasaki Shoten) won the gold medal. In addition, he has written many books and received many awards. Received the 41st Iwaya Sazanami Literature Award. He also designs books, CD jackets, posters, etc. Currently, the exhibition "Ikimono wa My Kagami" is touring the National Museum of Art.

At one point, I realized that the painting was like a magical spell to me. Only the time I draw is very encouraging, courageous, and able to push forward without being caught. Especially in live painting with musicians, I feel the quiet but tremendous energy that springs up from the depths of my heart.

Not only the finished painting itself, but also the clothes that I wore during the live performance, the paper and vinyl that were used as canvas, the cloth that was laid, etc. The drops were wrapped in air and momentum, and I felt that there was power. And by incorporating them into the picture again, he gave me great power.

At that time, I moved to the southern island. The intensity of the light made me fly white in front of me, and I couldn't see the boundary between the plants, the beach, and the sea. In addition, the deep shades of the forest make you feel as if you can see deep inside. Then, he encounters the traditional dyeing on the island. By dyeing the canvas cloth or the painting itself with the plants and water that were born in that area, I was able to incorporate the colors and air that I felt on the island into the painting.

Gradually, I also wear cloths and clothes to make pictures. What you wear directly receives the movement, deforms flexibly, and projects traces that are not left in the finished picture.

The cloth that I spent painting with and the dismantled clothes are dyed and put on canvas, and the torn paper and vinyl are collaged. The cloth and clothing underneath when drawing the picture also wears the moment and the air. And it becomes a picture again.

"Umitou" is a combination of "creating", "sea", which is the root of what we have always been particular about drawing creatures, and "wearing", which means clinging and entwining. There are artists who interact with each other to guide them.

"Umaito" is entwined and swirls in the world I create. At this exhibition, I would like to exhibit some of the live paintings, images of the production in the island forest, the process of tailoring clothes and dyeing, the materials that are born, and the finished pictures.
