"From now on, it's the real thing." These are the words Tadanori Yokoo expressed when he was selected as a member of the newly established <Architecture and Design> field at the Japan Art Academy in February of this year. I was left with the question, "Why did Mr. Yokoo, who was declared a painter 43 years ago, choose to work in the design field?" Was it?

In this exhibition, the main reason for Mr. Yokoo's selection as a member of the Japan Art Academy is "the design of 43 years ago, which expanded his field of activity into various fields such as literature, theater, music, film, and fashion" (1960-80). years). However, the target is not the finished product posters or books, but the rough sketches, idea notes, and drawings that make up the work. Drawings, original drawings, and collages as elements of expression. It is a huge “process of design expression” before the work is completed, such as block copy for finishing prints and posters, color specification paper, etc. If you compare it to the movie "Abashiri Bangaichi" starring Ken Takakura, who was a close friend of Mr. Yokoo, you can say that it is "a special place for Mr. Yokoo's work."

These materials and works have already been stored and organized in about 80 boxes at the Yokoo Tadanori Museum of Contemporary Art, but before touching the real thing, I checked over 18,000 photographs of the materials, works, and storage conditions. Furthermore, in order to carefully select 250 items for exhibition, I faced a pile of about 2,500 prints. The mountain of copy paper piled up high is already overflowing with the source of "Yokoo Art", a state of chaos named "Yokoo Archive". And by "slurping" them, the door of this special exhibition opened.

The exhibition space, which is lined with sketches, original drawings, block copies, etc., which will be exhibited extensively this time, will make you feel the warmth of Mr. Yokoo's hands, and promises a physical experience to the viewer rather than a mental experience. Like a black hole, it draws you into Yokoo's previously unseen creative space, absorbs it, and invites you to a state of "nothingness" that disappears. Yokoo's ultra-private black hole that continues to generate and act. If you get lost in the whirlpool of “extra land”, you may be able to reach and encounter the original hometown of Mr. Yokoo’s expression.

At Ginza Graphic Gallery (ggg), Mr. Yokoo has had three group exhibitions, including “Tadanori Yokoo Poster Exhibition: A Good Fortune and Prosperity!” (1997), “Tadanori Yokoo’s First Book Design” (2012). 1974-1975) and “Genka Gensou Gengatan 1974-1975” (2018). The essence of Yokoo's graphic design was exhibited in three genres (chapters): posters, book design, and illustrations. And now, for the 4th time, here in Ginza, "Tadanori Yokoo Ginza Bangaichi" will be held, focusing on the extra edition of Yokoo's work called "Design Process". You will see the final chapter of a big graphic design story quartet called Tadanori Yokoo. However, for Yokoo, this exhibition is nothing more than a process of unfinished business.

“Just like a day ends unfinished, a human life is never complete.
What is there is a cycle, a Moebius strip.
Completed and unfinished are two sides of the same coin, like a soul and a body. Tadanori Yokoo
