Ginza Sony Park, an urban park that creates a new rhythm for the city and its people, will have its grand opening on Sunday, January 26, 2025

The Ginza Sony Park Project is the final stage of the Sony Building reconstruction project in Ginza, Tokyo. Ginza Sony Park will have a grand opening on Sunday, January 26, 2025. It is an urban park that will create a new rhythm for the city and its people with plenty of space for people to spend their time as they like and ever-changing activities.

After completion in August 2024, Ginza Sony Park will open some floors during the construction period leading up to its grand opening, and will host special programs that can only be experienced in a space under construction. Last November, "ART IN THE PARK (under construction)" took advantage of the open atrium space above ground to display art and other works, attracting more than 10,000 visitors, including not only visitors and tourists passing by the intersection, but also Ginza workers. The program embodied a "park in the city," with people spending their time in their own way. Even after the grand opening on January 26 next year, various activities will be held to create a rhythm for the city and its people.

The first program to start at the same time as the grand opening is the "Sony Park Exhibition 2025," a creative experiential program created with six artists, mainly from the Sony Music Group, based on the theme of six Sony Group businesses. The Sony Park Exhibition is one of the representative activities of Ginza Sony Park, which was held in Ginza in 2021 and in Kyoto in 2022 and was very well received. While keeping the playful event themes such as "Games are a social gathering," "Music is a journey," and "Movies are a forest," you can enjoy a new Sony Park Exhibition with the participation of new artists and a completely new experiential program.

Additionally, as part of Ginza Sony Park's "food activities," a casual dining restaurant based on Western cuisine will be opening, proposing new ways of interacting with and enjoying food.

The official Sony Park website will be updated with information about Ginza Sony Park from time to time. Please stay tuned for additional information.

■ Overview of "Ginza Sony Park"

The intentionally low construction, about half the height of a standard building in Ginza, creates space and a new landscape in the densely populated city. Ginza Sony Park also inherits the design concept of a "facility open to the city" that has been cherished by the Sony Building, as well as unique architectural elements such as "junction architecture" and a "vertical promenade."
There will be no permanent tenants or shops, and each floor will have different activities. B3 will be the "casual dining" floor, and the open atrium on the ground floor and other "white space" areas will be places where people can wander around freely and take a break.

■ About the Ginza Sony Park Project

The Ginza Sony Park project is a project to rebuild the Sony Building, which has been a part of the Ginza area for over 50 years, with the concept of "a facility open to the city."

The Sony Building was built in 1966 by Akio Morita, one of the founders of Sony.

There was a 33-square-meter public space there that Morita called the "Ginza Garden," a symbol of "a facility open to the town." We wanted to carry on the founder's vision for the next 50 years, so we have been working on this project to expand the "Ginza Garden" into a "Ginza Park," creating a new rhythm for the town, making it more accessible to visitors, and providing a variety of ways to enjoy it.

In order to keep the rebuilding process unique and worthy of Sony's name, the company adopted a two-stage process based on an innovative idea. In the first stage, instead of immediately constructing a new building, the company carried out an unprecedented experimental attempt to turn the site into a park while the building was being demolished (August 2018 to September 2021). As a result, the park has been visited by a total of 8.54 million people over a period of about three years, including during the COVID-19 pandemic.

After that, demolition and new construction will resume in the second phase, with the final form of the project, Ginza Sony Park, scheduled for completion in August 2024, with its grand opening on Sunday, January 26, 2025.
