This exhibition features 40 unique, one-of-a-kind framed artworks that re-examine the value of everyday life through the act of "framing."
Starting Saturday, May 23rd, CIBONE CASE (Ginza) will host the first solo exhibition in Tokyo by CALDERA, a woodworking unit based in Kobe City, Hyogo Prefecture.
Their workshop is located in a corner of a historic shopping street, and their work takes place in the former site of a small boutique.
Using natural materials collected by the two of them based on their sensibilities, such as scraps from construction sites and wood with the bark still attached, they continue to create things using minimal tools such as handsaws and circular saws, cherishing the expressions and forms that can only be created by hand.
The framed artworks they have been focusing on in recent years are not limited to standard sizes.
The framed world that mediates between the observer and the observed brings about a transformation of meaning and value in the object, expanding the possibilities of individuality and expression, much like choosing furniture, music, or clothing.
Originally, picture frames are only necessary when there is something to display inside, and they have so far created custom-made frames in response to requests from artists who wanted to frame works of unusual sizes and shapes.
Drawing on our experience in custom-making store fixtures and furniture, our designs enhance and harmonize a variety of artworks, while the unique character of the frame itself transforms the impression of the space.
This exhibition features 40 unique, one-of-a-kind works.
The items you display don't have to be famous works or expensive; they can be paintings or photographs, things you picked up on your travels, items with personal significance, everyday tools, plants, and more.
Framing creates a "place" for objects, bringing a new perspective to familiar items and things you've collected without much thought.
These are art pieces, but they are not self-contained; rather, they are works that, through the free framing of things that the artist considers important and interesting, bring to life the contours of values and memories that were buried in everyday life. Please enjoy them.

CALDERA
A woodworking unit based in Kobe.
We create picture frames, furniture, shop fixtures, and objects using wood and building materials.
The name of our project, Caldera, refers to a landform created when the ground collapses due to a massive volcanic eruption. It derives from the fact that a succession process occurs after eruptive activity, in which a new ecosystem is formed. We create things that are not bound by conventional ideas, while making the most of the unique characteristics of natural materials.
