At Ginza Tsutaya Bookstore, I felt the possibility of new expressions rooted in the traditional Japanese culture of "Tsugi" in the works of Yukito Nishinaka, a glass modeling artist who is active in the world. We will hold "Glass Call-Breaking and Reborn-" in the store.

The tea masters of the Momoyama period used a technique called "succession" to find beauty in the cracks of the vessel and dare to repair it with gold to reborn the defects into individuality. In addition to splicing the broken vessels, there is also a "call splicing" that intentionally breaks the vessel and reconnects it, and also combines fragments of another vessel with the missing part. It was.
Nishinaka is a noted artist who continues to create new and original works using this traditional "succession" technique.
Along with this exhibition, we will hold a talk event on December 18th (Friday) to talk about our thoughts on creation.

  • Artist statement

In order to surpass my current self, I smash the vessels I made.
Just to reborn and create the future.
The aesthetic sense of the Momoyama tea master who found beauty in the cracks of the vessel, which is regarded as a defect all over the world, and dared to emphasize it with gold and repair it, and reborn it uniquely.
Japan's unique aesthetic sense of "Tsugi" is the foundation of my own expression as a world-class philosophy.
When I break a beautiful vessel, I still feel frightened, but there are things that can be overcome by breaking it.
We believe that there is no future as an extension of the past, and that the future is alive.
