·overview
Masataka Sato has been attracting attention from many art collectors in recent years for his style of creating abstract paintings using bold paints on pencil drawings so precise that they can be mistaken for photographs, using real people and flowers as motifs. . By using paint to cover parts of the work that people generally think are most beautiful, such as the eyes and petals, the original beauty of the motif itself is expressed. This is what he said in the statement for his solo exhibition “Dancing on the Edge” held at SCÈNE in the fall of 2021.
“Reality is not something that is manifested in surface beauty, but can be seen in the precarious balance that is maintained between various things, such as madness and sociability, instinct and kindness, etc. It is.”
Approximately two years have passed since this solo exhibition, and Sato, who has continued his tireless pursuit of reality, has chosen the phrase "Reality -Dancing on the Edge-" for the title of his collection and solo exhibition as the culmination of his current work. This exhibition will feature a number of new works, including three-dimensional works created by Sato's highly honed sensibilities. Furthermore, in conjunction with this exhibition, we will be releasing a special limited edition collection of works that will include the edition works. Please enjoy the world of works depicted by Masataka Sato from both the exhibition and the collection of works.
・Work explanation
●Flat work《Beauty 2》
This is the first work by Sato, who has so far mainly depicted white people as motifs, but when he was in New York for a solo exhibition, he began to consider depicting people of color as a necessary act for his own activities that pursue reality. .
●3D work《Woman's Head 1》
Sato, who dreamed of becoming a sculptor and pursued a career in art, always paints with a sense of creating images with clay. The work exhibited this time, Woman's Head 1, was created by me as a sculptor as a “real thing'' from the shapes I draw as a painter. This is his first attempt to transform a pictorial image of a person into a three-dimensional work.
・Artist statement
People only see the reality that they want to see. This leaves behind the facts that you are trying not to see and becomes immersed in a world of fantasy. The facts become clear by looking at the complexly intertwined reality not only from a biased perspective but also from a multifaceted and multilayered perspective.
Originally, I wanted to become a sculptor because of my longing for a sense of reality, so I pursued a career in art, so I always paint with the feeling of sculpting. When I paint, I feel like I'm sculpting, and when I'm sculpting, I'm drawing, so I let my senses go back and forth without distinction.
This is the first time that I have expressed what I imagine when drawing a person as a real thing.
The title of this exhibition, "Reality- Dancing on the Edge-" is a phrase that clearly expresses the expression I pursue. I believe that by arranging works of different formats in one space, I can convey more strongly the world I see.

<Author's comment>
I believe that the materiality that harmonizes the different materials of pencil and paint is important in my paintings.
In the edition works to be announced this time, we are not simply seeking reproductions that closely resemble the original paintings, but are attempting unique expressions using the unique materiality that distinguishes them from paintings using StareReap, a 2.5-dimensional printing technology.
