ATELIER MUJI Special Exhibition “Something that is Both – Mitsuru Koga’s Perspective”

5/24 (Fri) – 6/30 (Sun)

Ryohin Keikaku Co., Ltd., the operator of MUJI, will hold a special exhibition "Something that is both – Mitsuru Koga's Perspective" at ATELIER MUJI GINZA Gallery 1 and 2 in MUJI Ginza (Chuo-ku, Tokyo) from Friday, May 24th to Sunday, June 30th, 2024.

Ryohin Keikaku continues to create everyday items that support the fundamentals of daily life, adhering to the three principles of MUJI manufacturing: "selection of materials," "process inspection," and "simplification of packaging."

The works introduced here, which are made from everyday materials, by Mitsuru Koga, are different from everyday items, but they reveal an approach that can be seen in MUJI's manufacturing, such as "selecting materials" and "checking the process." Through this exhibition, we aim to display the perspective that goes into manufacturing, as well as the small everyday realizations and joys. Gallery 1 will feature industrial pieces made from wire, metal, cardboard, etc., while Gallery 2 will feature works made from natural materials such as stones, fallen leaves, and driftwood. There will also be a video showing Koga creating in his studio.

Mitsuru Koga (artist)
Born in Kanagawa Prefecture in 1980.
Living in a town by the sea, I create works from things I come across in my daily life: round stones and driftwood carved by the waves washed up on the beach, trees standing on the paths I walk on and in parks, leaves of plants of various shapes, cardboard boxes brought from far away countries, tin sheds in the fields… I create every day, feeling amazed that there are things close to me that I cannot fully know, even if I don't go far.
