4/18 (Fri) – 6/8 (Sun)
Ryohin Keikaku Co., Ltd., the operator of MUJI, will hold the Life in Art Samiro Yuzuki Exhibition "If It's Not Exciting, It's Boring" at ATELIER MUJI GINZA Gallery 1 and 2 within MUJI Ginza (Chuo-ku, Tokyo) from Friday April 18th to Sunday June 8th, 2025.
Ryohin Keikaku aims to realize "pleasant lifestyles and society" by incorporating art into everyday life, fostering a sense of beauty, encouraging people to reflect on their relationships with the local community, society and people they live in, and by carefully managing their days.
The art project "Life in Art", which we have been working on since 2011, asks questions such as, "Art is not simply beauty," how we see and think about it, what kind of life we want to live, and how we want to interact with society, the community and people. With the theme of everyday art, we have introduced works by artists and writers who sympathize with our creations, regardless of whether they are famous or unknown, contemporary or from Japan or abroad, and have hosted exhibitions and collaborations to introduce art that adds color to everyday life.
This exhibition resonates with the dye artist Yunoki's vision for a rich life, and will introduce the artworks and products that Ryohin Keikaku has created together with Yunoki since their first meeting. We hope that this exhibition will inspire many people to empathize with Yunoki's vision, and that it will take root and spread in our lives in the future, and we will continue our "Life in Art" activities.
■ Ryohin Keikaku and dyer Samiro Yunoki
Ryohin Keikaku has been working on various projects with Yunoki through the "Life in Art" project. Starting with an exhibition of stencil-dyed works in 2014, we have proposed a lifestyle with art from a wide variety of perspectives, including the production of original lithographs at "Idem Paris," a long-established lithograph studio in Paris that was also frequented by Picasso and Matisse, and collaborations with creators both in Japan and abroad. Our efforts have expanded further, and we have also worked on products such as tenugui and yukata, with the concept of allowing more people to enjoy their daily lives. Our work with Yunoki started by always thinking about the future of life, and we aimed to create products that fit into modern lifestyles, are modern yet fun, and that you will grow to love the more you use them.
Samiro Yunoki
Dye artist, born in Tokyo in 1922. After encountering the "Mingei" (folk art) advocated by Muneyoshi Yanagi, he became an apprentice under Keisuke Serizawa and decided to pursue a career in dyeing. In 1955, he held his first solo exhibition at Takumi Craft Shop in Ginza. Since then, he has continued to create works for over 50 years, presenting numerous works.
He held exhibitions both in Japan and abroad, including at the Guimet Museum of Asian Art in France, the Japan Folk Crafts Museum, and the Setagaya Art Museum, and received rave reviews. He passed away in January 2024.
