·Overview

Yujiro Ueno is a writer who has created paintings with the motif of creatures such as birds and beasts, focusing on the "ki" of Eastern thought, based on the idea that "everything is always influencing each other as a fluid existence". ..

After spending four years in Okinawa from 2015, he has participated in many notable exhibitions including TURNER AWARD and won awards. He has just completed the master's program at the Graduate School of Fine Arts, Tokyo University of the Arts in 2021, and is one of the young artists who are drawing attention in the future.

In this solo exhibition, a new work will be exhibited under the title of "Surge".
For the motif of the work, I chose dragon and phoenix. On the technical side, not only the stroke of the brush, but also the color surface is shown as a layer, and a new technique is adopted.
In addition, in the small work exhibited this time, we will also make a new attempt to show only the stroke of the brush, and the contents will show the new frontier of Ueno.

Up until now, Ueno has drawn mainly real animals, but since his completion, he has consciously drawn fictional creatures centered on dragons. Breaking out of the picture that converges on easy-to-understand words such as "animal life", presenting a more complex idea. In addition, Ueno's own method expresses the image of a universal dragon that humans have imagined and drawn since ancient times.

"Surge" has the meaning of "swell, vortex, big wave, boiling" and has the etymology of "rising upward" in Latin. The circulating "vortex" is one of the important images in expressing the fluctuations of living things and the outside world, as well as the larger substances and the flow of time, which are the themes of Ueno's production.
By drawing a dragon as a symbol of the chaos and swirling power of the natural world, we intend to reach an image that has both newness that reflects the modern era and universality that transcends time and place. ..

・ Artist statement

I mainly use living things as a motif, and my theme of my expression is to approach the inherent qi and fluctuations with the outside world, or the flow of time and matter that continues while repeating generation and disappearance.
In exploring these themes, I focus on the brushstrokes as a way to open up my senses, and take a method of layering them. This is influenced by the oriental ink painting, the impressionist brush stroke division, and the multi-layered drawing method of ukiyo-e.
Therefore, in my production, I use water-soluble paints and oil paints together, and build screens with various brush strokes while taking advantage of the characteristics of each.
The fusion of different elements can also be said to be a modeling element. For example, by integrating the game of concrete and abstract, modern and ancient, east and west, yin and yang, etc., we created it with the intention of presenting it as a new expression in modern times while inheriting the history and culture of the past.
