Released a large work with a motif of phoenix and dragon. Sculptor Yushi Nishijima’s exhibition “Zui-shou – A continuation of time -” will be held from April 28 (Friday)

At the Pola Museum Annex (Ginza, Chuo-ku, Tokyo), sculptor Yuji Nishijima's first large-scale solo exhibition, "Zui-shou – Continuation of Time-" will be held from Friday, April 28, 2023 to Sunday, June 4, 2023. ) will be held.

Yuji Nishijima's works form motifs by connecting parts of copper wire that he winds up in a spiral by himself. He has presented numerous sculptures and installations both in Japan and overseas, using animals that are closely related to mythology, such as deer, elephants, and yatagarasu. The works are composed of thousands of parts and woven together over a long period of time to create the depth of time. It stirs the imagination of invisible "signs" such as scenes.

This exhibition will feature three works, including a new installation. Zuisho, which is used in the title, means a harbinger or auspicious omen that auspicious things will happen. In the pandemic situation of the past few years, Nishijima arrived at the motif of "God" while imagining bright signs and hopes, and will meet together as two masterpieces, the phoenix and the dragon. Please experience the powerful space that sparkles in silence.

"Zui-un" 2022 Copper wire BIWAKO BIENNALE 2022

writer statement

I am interested in people's "existence" and their "signs".

Feel what fills the space and give it shape.
Reconfigure the space from the given shape.
The "signs" are visualized by the shapes that can be sensed through the light.

On the other hand, I think about "presence" and "presence" from the aspect of accumulation of time. The concept of time is added by using the parts of the copper wire that are twisted one by one by one's own hands to represent the time spent by oneself, and by using the accumulation to give shape.

I want to create a double structure in space by making a visual "sign" and a world constructed from the concept of time exist at the same time, and use that phenomenon to directly question the senses.

In recent years, while thinking about "existence" and "sign", he uses "God" as a motif.
I think that "God" is another name for the "sixth sense" that people perceive.
